Make a Mindful Morning Ritual

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning? Does it happen to be grabbing your phone and scrolling through social media and emails? I am totally guilty of this but realize more and more the negative effects it can have on the whole day. You’re starting your day off by comparing yourself to others right off the bat, and not only others, but the “ideal” lives they’re portraying on social media. It seems like dreaming is the time of day (or night) that our minds are most fascinating and creative, so when we first wake up, we are still in that loose and creative mindset. Instead of a mindless activity like staring at a screen, why not use that creativity to our advantage?

A great practice is to keep a journal next to your bed and reaching for that instead of your phone. Take a few moments each morning to write down the wild dreams you had the night before, set goals or an intention for the day, or even write a little poem. Really anything that you enjoy, gets your mind going and takes advantage of that creativity still bursting inside you!

Those 10, 15... OK, 30 minutes you set aside for social media scrolling can be put to such better use for not only waking up your mind but waking up your body as well! Sun salutations are a perfect way to slowly and mindfully start your morning. Try making a pact with yourself to do a few sun salutations each day right when you get out of bed, and let your alarm be your trigger. Or just roll out your yoga mat and stretch and flow in whatever way feels right to you. If you’re feeling really ambitious, commit to that 10-15 minute HIIT workout or a quick jog around the neighborhood.

I’m not even embarrassed to admit that I even like to turn on my favorite song and dance. Getting some movement in in the morning is such a great habit to get into. It will give you so much more sustained energy throughout the day and put you in a better mood, not to mention help you with that rockin’ bod. If this is all sounding like too much, start small.

A great alternative to social media scrolling is meditation. Set up a cozy space in your room, light a candle or some palo santo, and get to it! Don’t let the idea of meditating scare you. The most important thing is that you are setting aside time for yourself to sit in silence and not worrying about anything except the present moment. Don’t worry if your mind wanders or if you are “doing it right” because there is no right or wrong. You are showing yourself some serious self-love and that is all that matters! Try apps like Insight Timer or Headspace for short guided meditations to start. It will put you in a positive mindset for the whole day and might even keep you zen while you’re on that commute or sitting through a stressful meeting.

Your morning sets the tone for your whole day, so choose your minutes and hours wisely! Vow to put the phone down in the mornings and make a morning ritual that shows yourself some love and care.
