8 (woo-woo) Ways to Kill a Hangover…that actually work!


I respect all the wellness bloggers out there that wake up at 5am to get a morning flow in followed by a perfectly assembled acai bowl with adaptogenic drizzle never to fall at the mercy of an evening cocktail, but try as I might, that’s just not me. Don’t get me wrong, I have fleeting moments of discipline that seem to get more prevalent the more I put my mind to it, but I guess I can say that I value experience over deprivation, and my commitment to health changes on a daily basis.

I don’t know how long I have here, and for as much as I believe in past lives, I don’t know if I’ll ever be back, so while I’m here I want to see it all, feel it all, taste it all. Be unapologetically loud and surround myself with people of the same nature. This same “zest” for life has oftentimes led me to overindulge, sacrificing Saturdays and Sundays for the night spent before.

If you are also learning the lesson of moderation, I’ve got some tried and true hangover cure-all tricks for you.


1.Flush it out Maybe the most obvious, but it needs to be said. Keep drinking water and electrolyte-boosting drinks like coconut water (even if you don’t want to).

2.Get in the Tub I get it. When you’re deathly ill, the last thing you want to do is get your a$$ in the bath, but there is something about physically washing away the night before that it is deeply purifying. Put some soothing spa music on and soak away your sins.

Try this essential oil bath salt recipe from Modern Essentials to detox and relax

Add 5 drops grapefruit, 2 drops rosemary and 1 drop juniper berry to 1 cup Epsom salts. Dissolve ½ cup of the salts in warm bathwater. Save the other half for next time ;)

A hangover is part dehydration and part your body trying to process all the junk, but a lot of it is mental too. While you’re in the tub, imagine all of the toxins flowing out of your body and into the water. Don’t rush it.

3.Meditate If you’d rather stay in bed, there are still some mind tricks you can play to displace the pain. Locate exactly where the pain is and imagine it turning into a bright red color. Observe it. Imagine it getting smaller and smaller. Watch it leave your body. For example, if the pain is in your forehead, you might imagine blowing it right out of your nose. There are also free guided meditations for pain management on Insight Timer. (I realize how ridiculous this sounds, but just try it and tell me it doesn’t work.)

P.S. Don’t forget to breathe. Inhale for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds. Repeat.

4.Essential Oils and/or a Relaxing Candle The more relaxed you can make the space, the more relaxed you’ll feel. Turn your bedroom into a comfortable spa. Run essential oils like lemon, grapefruit, lavender, rosemary, sandalwood, peppermint or juniper through a diffuser, rub them on your temples, and inhale them from your hands or straight from the bottle. Ahhhh….

5.Pacify Pitta Long story short, Ayurveda believes that the body is orchestrated by three ruling doshas. When one dosha is thrown out of balance (by things like diet, external influences or alcohol), it causes physical disturbances. Hangovers are caused by the “Pitta” dosha being thrown out of whack, so pacifying Pitta is the key to a cure.

You can do this by chewing a couple pieces of ginger or peppermint, drinking ginger tea or tomato juice, or eating foods like banana, apple, lemon and honey

I haven’t tried this concoction yet but discovered it while researching Pitta-pacifying recipes:

1 cup water, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon of sugar, pinch of salt. Just before drinking, add 1/2 teaspoon baking soda.

6.Lapis Lazuli Place this crystal right on your forehead or stomach for immediate pain relief and energy. To supercharge its healing powers, cover it with a cool compress. Depending on how severe the hangover, this may or may not work, but it is worth a shot.

(Never doubt the power of the rock, crystals play a key component in running things like clocks and electronic devices.)

7.Oil Pulling Right when you wake up, before you do anything else, swish a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth for 20 minutes (or as long as you can take it). Spit it out and wash your mouth out. Try not to swallow any of it; that stuff is cleaning out your system.

8. CBD Oil Saving the best for last. As a first line of defense or when all else fails, CBD oil is a miracle-worker. CBD is the non-psychoactive component of the cannabis plant, legal in most states and interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system for stress and pain relief.

Just remember, mind over matter. Don’t get down on yourself or feel guilty for your actions. It happens, and tomorrow is a new day. Happy weekending!
